Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

“May you be half an hour in heaven
Before the devil knows your dead.”

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in the United States on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City.

“May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.”

Guinness sales soar on St. Patrick’s Day. Recent figures show that 5.5 million pints of the black stuff are downed around the world every day. On St. Patrick’s Day that figure is doubled.

“Here’s to absent friends and here’s twice to absent enemies.”

Chicago has been celebrating Saint Patrick by dumping green dye into the Chicago River since 1962. It takes 40 tons of dye to get the river to a suitably festive shade.

“May the Good Lord take a liking to you… but not too soon!”

St. Patrick was not Irish. He was from Wales.
