On average, the first hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season starts…today, August 10th.

This year we’re almost spot on…”Franklin” became the seasons’ first hurricane yesterday, August 9th, and made landfall in Mexico last night.

On average, the first named system forms on July 9th and the first big hurricane, Category 3 or higher, forms on Sept. 4th. The peak of the season in Sept. 10th. For the northeast U.S. the biggest threat is in October, when hurricanes have a larger tendency to track more north than east.

In Southwestern CT (Fairfield, New Haven counties) we’ve had 5 hurricanes since 1900.
