Not so fast…
Maybe your insurer hit you with a big increase or is demanding an inspection. So go look for a new provider, right? Well, the problem is that pretty much all insurers are not looking to write new business right now. Many are even looking to reduce the number of policies that they have on the books by non-renewing existing policies. The reasons are many, but the result is that your next insurer is going to nitpick your property on any new policy. That means they’re going to inspect, and if something’s not right they’re going to make sure you fix it. You might end up spending much more on repairs than you save on insurance premiums. The prior insurer likely won’t take you back and if you try to go to the next insurer you’ll get the same thing.
So, when you tell us you want us to quote and eventually write a new home insurance policy tell us everything, including unusual stuff that we might not even ask you. We don’t want to save you a few dollars only to have your new insurer tell you to trim that tree, install those handrails or make other costly demands. Or even get a flat-out cancellation. In the current market it can be wise to keep your current insurer unless you’re sure you won’t have any problems.
This is a great reason that you have an agent.
