The Federal Trade Commission has voted to ban non-compete agreements. Businesses, including insurance agencies, routinely use these to protect themselves from employees going to a competing employer and taking customers with them. Other industries also use them to protect data, trade secrets, etc.
This could be destructive to many industries, employers, employees and customers. It will create less customer service as employees that service the customers will be less engaged with the customer so the relationship with the customer doesn’t leave if the employee leaves.
It passed on a 3-2 vote by the appointees on the FTC board. Three un-elected people making decisions affecting the lives and jobs of millions.
This is not the role of the federal government. It has been pushed for by Sen. Murphy of CT.
